I retired from public education after 27 years of service. Now I dedicate my time to caring for my two grandchildren, writing and the Internet. I am concerned that all children learn to read and comprehend at the highest level possible. I spent too many years observing and working with children from middle to high school who could not read. People who cannot read miss out on a lot in this world. I believe that children learn better when they are not burdened down with poor self esteem. The old saying, "hair is a woman's crowning glory" is not over stated. It should include the male also. I am actively involved in helping my ten year old granddaughter learn to care for her own hair. Sometimes I think I created a monster when I taught my neice, who is now 19, how to do her own hair. She makes extra money braiding hair.

People of color are often teased and ridiculed about the texture and style of their hair. My sisters all had what was often called "good hair". Ma always insisted that all of her children had good hair. She claimed that she liked mine better because it was stronger and held a style longer. I always thought that was because my father's favorite terms for me were "big eyed" and "knotty headed".  My brother still sports his long braid showing off the "Indian" in him. My hair has been permed, braided, cornrowed, twisted, hot combed, blow dried and completely shaved and waxed. I have a severe allergy to even the mildest "perm". After trying almost every concoction to soften and straighten my natural tresses, I decided that maybe my Mother was right.  Maybe I do have the best hair.
